Description

This set originates from the pottery workshops of our partners, where production is measured in heat and dust rather than precision metrics. The process begins with raw, iron-rich clay dug from the local earth. A potter throws the cup on a kick-wheel, pulling the walls up into a tapered cylinder in seconds, while the rectangular tray is formed in a mold and smoothed by hand.

The pieces dry in the open air before entering a wood-fired kiln. The temperatures fluctuate, baking the clay into a hard, resonant ceramic that carries the specific atmosphere of the workshop where it was made.

Physically, the set is defined by its irregularities. The glaze is thick and glossy, applied over the white base coat with a heavy hand. You can feel the ridges of the orange and red floral brushstrokes; the paint sits on top of the enamel rather than fading into it. The rim of the cup is likely not a perfect circle, and the tray may have a slight warp from the drying process. These aren’t defects; they are proof of the material’s reaction to fire. The base is left unglazed and rough, providing friction against the table and showing the toasted terra cotta color of the fired body.

This ceramic is built for utility, not display. The glaze seals the porous clay, making it functional for hot mint tea or strong coffee. However, it requires hand washing. Industrial dishwashers and microwaves will destroy the finish. Over time, you might see crazing—a network of fine cracks in the glaze. This is the clay expanding and contracting. It doesn’t affect the structural integrity. It just shows that the piece is reacting to its environment. Use it daily. It is dense, heavy, and meant to be handled.
