Description

THE ORIGIN

Clay dug from riverbeds in Fez. Soaked in pits. Filtered by hand to remove the rocks. A potter throws this slab on a foot-powered wheel. The rhythm is fast. The shape is formed in seconds. It dries under the North African sun until the moisture is gone. First firing hardens the mud. Second firing melts the glass. No assembly lines. Just muscle memory and wood smoke.

THE BUILD

The surface is not flat. It ripples. The glaze is thick and glossy, pooling slightly at the base of the raised heart. The stripes are hand-brushed. They waver. You can see where the brush was lifted and set back down. The central heart is sculpted relief, standing proud of the plate’s floor. The eye stares back with a matte black pupil against the shine.

  • Thick, glossy enamel glaze seals the porous clay
  • Central heart motif features raised tactile relief
  • Dense earthenware body provides substantial weight

THE FUNCTION

This is earthenware. It hates thermal shock. Do not put it in the microwave. It will crack. Do not put it in the dishwasher. The heat will dull the paint. Wash it with warm water and a rough sponge. Use it to serve dry food. Hang it on a wall to watch the room. It is built to be used, but it demands respect.
