Description
THE ORIGIN
Mined from the clay banks around Fes. The earth starts grey and heavy. Artisans kick the wheel and pull the walls up by hand. No molds. No automation. Just muscle memory and mud. The firing process is intense. It bakes the clay into stone. The painting happens freehand before the final glaze locks it in. It smells of fired earth and metal work.
THE BUILD
The surface isn’t uniform. It features a heavy crackle glaze. Tiny fractures run through the white finish. It looks aged. The grapevine motif is painted in a stark, iron-oxide brown. The lines vary in thickness. Evidence of the brush. At the neck and base, brass collars hug the ceramic. The metal is etched. It’s not polished to a mirror shine. It has texture.
- Deep crackle glaze provides a tactile, uneven surface map.
- Etched brass collars feel cold and rigid against the ceramic body.
- Substantial weight at the base anchors the tall silhouette.
THE FUNCTION
These are for dry display. The porous nature of low-fire clay and the crackle glaze means they sweat. Do not fill with water without a plastic liner. Use them for dried branches or tall grasses. Keep them on the floor or a sturdy console. Wipe with a dry cloth. Do not use chemical cleaners on the brass. Let it darken.
